The Scratch Foundation supports approaches to coding and learning that engage young people in thinking creatively, reasoning systematically, and working collaboratively – essential skills for everyone in today’s society. Our dream is to provide technology that enables people to do this free of charge. We provide core financial support to Scratch (scratch.mit.edu), the block-based programming language and online community developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. We also support ScratchJr (scratchjr.org), the free app for younger children inspired by Scratch and developed by Tufts University and the MIT Media Lab; and ScratchEd (
http://scratched.gse.harvard.edu), the online community of educators who use Scratch, managed by the Harvard Graduate School of Education. We believe all kids should have access to learning tools, technologies, and communities that support creativity, identity development, and collaboration. The Foundation’s three core areas of activity include: Raising funds: our fundraising activities with corporations, individuals, and foundations ensure that Scratch, ScratchJr, and ScratchEd will remain free, for everyone. Sharing our ideas: we support a different approach to coding, one that celebrates self-expression, creativity, and collaboration. We produce content (interviews, articles, videos) and work with partners to share these ideas with educators, parents, and collaborators. Growing the ecosystem: to reach everyone, we recognize we can’t do it alone. We collaborate with like-minded organizations on outreach activities, resource development, and content projects.
