Supporting Computer Science Education Week, and recognizing the Hour of AI
Supporting Computer Science Education Week, and recognizing the Hour of AI Whereas Computer Science Education Week highlights the crucial role that computer science plays in transforming society and fostering innovation and economic opportunity; Whereas computing technology is deeply embedded in modern culture and transforms how individuals interact with one another and the world; Whereas computer science is foundational to almost every sector of the U.S. economy, significantly contributing to economic output; Whereas artificial intelligence (AI) literacy refers to the technical knowledge, durable skills, and future-ready attitudes required to thrive in a world influenced by AI. It enables learners to engage with, create with, manage, and shape AI, while critically evaluating its benefits, risks, and ethical implications; Whereas the field of computer science, including AI, includes powerful technologies with the capacity to transform nearly all sectors of the U.S. economy; Whereas technological leadership in all areas of computer science, including AI, is essential for both economic strength and national security; Whereas encouraging students to participate in high-quality computer science and AI learning opportunities, such as completing an Hour of AI, helps demystify these fields and can inspire further study and exploration; Whereas the Hour of AI is launched globally and year-round to advance foundational AI literacy alongside computer science for learners of all ages, accessible to students and educators anywhere; Whereas learning through an Hour of AI, even for just one hour, equips students to move from being mere users of AI to thoughtful creators, capable of shaping how AI is used and evolves; Therefore, be it resolved, that the (HOUSE OR SENATE, STATE, COUNTY, CITY OR SCHOOL BOARD) - Supports the designation of Computer Science Education Week (December 8–14, 2025), honoring the birthday of Grace Hopper and the spirit of innovation she inspired; Encourages schools, educators, families, and policymakers to participate in the Hour of AI, celebrating every student, educator, or community member who completes an hour of AI learning; Encourages schools, administrators, researchers, universities, business leaders, and policymakers to identify mechanisms for teachers to receive professional development to provide sustainable learning experiences in computer science and AI education at all educational levels, and encourages students to be exposed to computer science, including AI literacy knowledge and skills; Encourages expanding opportunities, including through existing programs, for broad access to computer science and AI education.
